Coaching Tips for Homeschool Moms: 4 Powerful Mindset Shifts You Need Right Now

As a graduated homeschool mom of four and a certified life coach working in the homeschool space, I’ve spent years guiding homeschool moms through the challenges of this off-the-beaten path life journey. Over the past week, I realized there are four things I consistently say when coaching homeschool moms. While they don’t apply to every mom, they come up again and again—and today I want to share them with you.

These four points can help you homeschool with confidence, create healthy boundaries, and care for yourself along the way.

Homeschooling is an incredible opportunity to live, learn, and grow alongside your children. But it can also feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to do all the things perfectly. In my early years, I spent almost two years researching homeschooling, trying to convince myself that going “off the beaten path” was the right choice.

4 Coaching Tips for Homeschool Moms

Now, I’ve learned that homeschooling isn’t just about curriculum or checking boxes. It’s about connection, clarity, and living intentionally—while also taking care of yourself. Here are the four things I repeat most often to the moms I coach:

1. Focus on the Child in Front of You

One of the first questions I ask in coaching is: “What do you believe education is anyway?”

I tried to recreate private school at home, studied multiple languages with the kids, and packed countless subjects into each day. As we studied Latin, I learned that the root of the word education, “educato,” means to raise up.

So my question to you is: Who are you raising up?

If you have a child in front of you, that’s the child you’re raising. You may have multiple children, but the principle is the same. When you educate them, focus on the child in front of you today, not an abstract version of the “perfect student.” Your daily choices and activities should align with what actually helps them grow.

If you have a child in front of you, that’s the child you’re raising. You may have multiple children, but the principle is the same. When you educate them, focus on the child in front of you today, not an abstract version of the “perfect student” and not an “average student” (whatever that is!)–just your kids. Your daily choices and activities should align with what actually helps them grow.

2. Setting Boundaries That Work

Boundaries are essential—not just for your kids, but for yourself and your family.

I often remind moms: “Boundaries are necessary for us to fuel up our energy reserves…If you want your kids to believe your boundaries, you need to believe them first.”

Teresa Wiedrick, Certified Life Coach for Homeschool Moms

This can mean boundaries around:

  • Your time and attention
  • Your personal space (yes, even the bathroom!)
  • Your energy and mental health

Children don’t read minds, and they aren’t here to serve our needs.

You need to be clear on your boundaries first and truly believe in them before expecting others to honour them.

3. Remember You Are Human Too

Homeschool moms are busy. We juggle lesson plans, laundry, meals, and everyone’s emotional needs—and often forget that we ourselves have needs.

I always remind moms: “If you are a homeschool mom, you are a human too…you are so busy trying to do all the things for everyone that we forget that we haven’t eaten lunch or we haven’t slept well…you need to address your basic human needs.”

Teresa Wiedrick, Certified Life Coach for Homeschool Moms

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential. Taking care of yourself fuels your energy, clarity, and ability to show up fully for your children.

4. You Are Your Child’s Most Important Curriculum

Finally, the most important point I make:

“You are the most important curriculum in your child’s life. Everything you do, how you speak, what you value, all the things that you are and how you show up for them, that is your kids’ most important curriculum.”

When you live your life purposefully, your children learn to do the same.

Your presence, values, and choices shape their understanding of the world more than any textbook or lesson plan ever could.
